Our ELL program is designed to accelerate a student’s comfort and confidence in their English language fluency. Each course is adapted to best fit the needs of the student, from fundamental English phrases and grammar rules through more advanced reading comprehension.
Building mastery in English as a second langage
We offer six levels of ELL instruction for learners of all incoming proficiencies.
Set the foundation for an understanding of the English language with basic conversational phrases and greetings, and build a vocabulary about food, family, and recreation.
- Conversations: Learn basic greetings and phrases for everyday interactions, such as asking for help, ordering food, and introducing oneself. Focus on the simple present tense.
- Vocabulary: Build vocabulary related to food, family, sports, colors, clothes, and pets.
- Grammar: Master singular and plural nouns and verbs, and adapt language to grammar rules.
Dive deeper into grammatical conventions and balance between present, past, and future tense. Begin reading short stories in English to practice sight reading, pronunciation, and context clues for vocabulary.
- Grammar: Learn past, present, and future tenses for sentences, questions, and commands.
- Vocabulary: Expand vocabulary to include emotions, places, money-related questions, hobbies, and animals.
- Reading: Read short stories to improve pronunciation, speed, and comprehension.
Boost your confidence in your English speaking fluency and reading comprehension, grow more comfortable with complex phrases and advanced vocabulary.
- Writing: Apply vocabulary and grammar in basic writing assignments. Explore sentence elements like subjects and objects.
- Reading: Progress to complex texts, focusing on unknown words and story elements.
- Advanced Vocabulary: Learn words for weather, seasons, transportation, events, and idioms for informal contexts.
Dive into fundamental grammar rules to elevate your English fluency, both in spoken conversation and in reading comprehension. Investigate subject-verb agreement, fragments and run-ons, irregular words, as well as figurative language.
- Grammar: Study sentence structures, subject-verb agreement, prepositions, fragments, and run-ons.
- Written Fluency: Fix incorrect sentences and improve punctuation and clause usage.
- Expressions & Conversations: Practice figurative language (metaphors, similes) and common expressions through poetry and verse.
Determine the balance between formal and informal tone, and extend your understanding of definite/indefinite articles, the subjunctive, and advanced questions.
- Manner of Speech: Explore formal and informal tones, infinitives, and the subjunctive clause with oral exercises.
- Vocabulary: Learn terms for food, leisure, family, and school subjects. Use context clues in short stories.
- Advanced Conversations: Practice real-world scenarios, like reservations and academic discussions.
Examine longer stories and nonfiction texts for their main ideas, themes, and points of view. Learn about key components of American culture, including places to see, customs by which to abide, and popular social norms.
- Reading for Information: Analyze nonfiction for main ideas, details, and text features, such as headings, charts, and captions.
- Written Fluency: Learn essay structure, including the hook, thesis, topic sentences, evidence, and conclusion.
- American Culture & Norms: Discuss U.S. traditions, historical places, customs, and social norms.
