Course syllabus
Our ELA coursework focuses on Annotated Reading, Applied Grammar, Building Paragraphs, and culminates with a Final Project.
- Enter the world of mystery fiction with a deepened understanding of its purpose and components. Read and analyze classic texts featuring the character Sherlock Holmes to understand the fictional archetype of the detective. Acquire new vocabulary using context clues and apply your knowledge of new note-taking techniques.
- Use fiction to make connections with the real world and other media; determine the impact of writing as a self-reflective tool. Reflect on the author’s point of view and the story’s theme.
- Develop an assertive claim about the book and map out cohesive paragraph structures to analyze its impact. Integrate text-based evidence to support your argumentation.
- Write a mystery story of your own; use unconventional plot structures to hide clues and suspects throughout your text. Deepen your narrative technique with the principle of “show, don’t tell,” and revise your story with an editing exercise.

Hear What Our Students Have to Say!
"Having just finished up my freshman year, I am delighted to announce that English II was a breeze thanks to you. After taking all the different levels of Letterly, I gained the confidence to take the exam to skip a grade in English the very same year I took your classes."
“In school, I just read a passage and answer multiple choices ... at Letterly, we do more reading, annotating, and writing. We learn how to make it stronger using conjunctions, clauses, and more. We then learn how to use these methods in our writing”
